Eddie Howe forced his way into the Bournemouth first team at the end of the 1995-96 season but found the 1996-97 season a frustrating.
He did become a regular in the 1997-98 season with his consistent performances winning him the Player of the Year award and a place in the England Under-21 squad for the Toulon Tournament.
He was again Player of the Year in 1998-99 but missed a large part of the 1999-2000 season with a knee ligament injury he suffered in the match against Stoke City.
He returned towards the end of the season and was made club captain.
Howe had the misfortune to suffer a knee injury shortly before the start of the 2000-01 campaign and it was not until the end of October that he returned to first-team duties for Bournemouth.
Once fit however, he re-established himself in the team and formed an effective partnership in the centre of defence with Jason Tindall.
He was linked to several clubs including Oldham Athletic and Wigan Athletic, in the spring of 2002 but chose to sign for Portsmouth on Transfer Deadline Day for £400,000.
He made his debut against Preston North but suffered a knee injury that caused him to miss the rest of the 2001-02 season.
Howe is a commanding centre half who is calm on the ball and likes to get forward for set pieces.
After a loan spell, Howe re-joined Bournemouth in November 2004 with a contract to June 2007.
