A skilful target man who holds the ball up well, Ebbe Sand won his first cap for Denmark against Norway in April 1998 and was used as a substitute in the 1998 Finals in France. He made an immediate impression when he scored against Nigeria only 24 seconds after coming on. He was the leading scorer in his country's qualifying games for the 2002 World Cup finals, including a hat-trick in the 5-0 win in Malta. At club level, he was a member of the Brøndby team that won the Danish championship in three successive seasons before joining Schalke 04 for £3.3million in 1999. Since overcoming a serious illness, Ebbe has gained a winners' medal in the German Cup in 2001 and twice been named the runner-up to the Bundesliga's Player of the Year. Denmark's targetman is not only good in the air, but is deadly in front of goal and has good awareness in the attacking third.
