Petkovic, who previously played for Wolfsburg and Nurnberg in Germany before joining OFK Belgrad, was controversially called up to the Serbia and Montenegro World Cup 2006 squad, by his father, Ilija Petkovic, following an injury to Mirko Vucinic. However, following excessive criticism, he decided to withdraw from the squad before the tournament started. FIFA refused to allow a replacement to be added to the squad.
