Don Hutchison

A summer capture from Everton, Don was without doubt one of the 'steals' of the 2000-01 season and his acquisition represents another outstanding piece of business by Sunderland boss Peter Reid.

Although he took a little time to settle in with his new team-mates his season took off after netting two goals in a Worthington Cup tie at Bristol Rovers and he never looked back.

He can play in midfield or attack although the former is probably his best position as his superb reading of the game and passing ability can be used to maximum effect. His season was littered with high points, notably an equalising goal in the North-East 'derby' against Newcastle United in November 2000 and two further strikes from quickly-taken free-kicks against Manchester City and West Ham United.

He continued to feature regularly for Scotland and his superb contribution to Sunderland's campaign was recognised when he was voted the Supporters Association's 'Player of the Year'.

Don was bought by Liverpool from Hartlepool United for £300,000 and impressed before loss of form and off-field disciplinary problems led to his transfer to West Ham United.

Don joined Millwall in August 2005 with a six-month contract.

After a loan spell, he joined Coventry City in January 2006 with a contract to the end of the season that was extended to June 2007 in June 2006.

Don joined Luton Town in July 2007 with a one-year contract.
