An excellent performer in the midfield area he has been pressed into service for the national team on the problem left hand side. He began his career at Lokomotiv Moscow in 1991 he moved to neighbours Moscow Spartak in 1993. Here he became the protégé of the current national coach Oleg Romantsev, won the Russian title in 1996 and was Russian player of the year in 1997. He made his international debut in 1996 and has been a regular team member ever since. He left Russia to play in Italy for Roma in 1998 and after an unsuccessful spell at Perugia moved to Portugal and current club FC Porto in 2000. A hard working midfielder he will be employed here on the left.
