Once one of the rising stars in Spain, he has had a prolific scoring career.
A product of the Real Betis youth system, he could not find a way into the first team and moved to Real Mallorca in 1998.
His goalscoring exploits came to the attention of Real Madrid but, after Florentino Perez became president, he did not sign for them but for Deportivo La Coruna at the start of the 2000-01 season.
He made his international debut in June 2001 against Bosnia and has been a regular squad member ever since.
His appearances in the Champions League have led to many clubs chasing his signature having become disillusioned with the rotation system used at Deportivo La Coruna.
Although not a regular starter for Spain, he eased out Fernando Morientes for the second striker's position to link up with Raul in their first two games of the 2002 World Cup finals against Slovenia and Paraguay.
