England international Dick Spence was a small tricky winger who joined Chelsea from Barnsley where he had won the Third Division North championship. He was a crowd favourite and remained loyal to the club as a player until retirement when he joined the coaching staff. He holds the record for the oldest player to have played in a first-class game for the club – at 39 years and 57 days when he lined up against Bolton Wanderers.
