Walker was once again a rock-like figure in the centre of the Sheffield Wednesday defence in 2000-01. He produced some outstanding displays, captaining the team and offering a great role model to the club's younger professionals. He is still quick, although perhaps a little slower than in his prime, but his ability to read the game is what makes him such a quality defender. Walker played his 350th senior game for the Owls against Tranmere in February 2001. He played 59 times for England.
Following his succesful return to the City Ground, the veteran centre back signed a new one-year contract with Nottingham Forest in May 2003.
