Dennis Wise

The 2000-01 season was a topsy-turvy affair for Dennis Wise at Chelsea.

Shortly after lifting his sixth major trophy - the FA Charity Shield - he was voted the 'Player of the Year' for 2000, his second such award in three years, and as a measure of his importance to the club he signed a one-year extension to his contract with the offer of a coaching role on his retirement as a player.

His next landmark was to break the 400 first-team appearance barrier and so put himself in fourth place in the club's all-time list of appearance makers before his fortunes plummeted with the departure of Luca Vialli.

New boss Claudio Ranieri played him on the left of midfield and sometimes as a left wing back rather than in his customary central role.

Nevertheless, he remained a regular in the line-up and scored his third goal of the season in the final match at Manchester City's Maine Road to help clinch a UEFA Cup place for 2001-02.

However, his future at Stamford Bridge remained uncertain and he signed for Leicester City in the summer of 2001.

After a season interupted by injury and Leicester City's relegation, he was released by the club in the summer of 2002 after an alleged incident during the clubs pre-season tour.

The Millwall player / manager's contract was extended to June 2006 in November 2004 but he resigned in May 2005.

Dennis joined Coventry City in January 2006 with a contract to the end of the season.

Dennis joined Swindon Town as player / manager in May 2006 with a three-year contract.
