As a young Port Vale trainee, Del was surprisingly called up for first-team duty in the opening home game of the 2000-01 season against Oxford when he came off the subs' bench to replace Tony Naylor for the final five minutes. He subsequently spent the remainder of the campaign continuing his football education in the reserves.
