Smith captained Leyton Orient in 2000-01, providing inspirational leadership to guide the team into the play-off finals before they eventually fell to Blackpool. A powerful central defender he showed some excellent form when marking Alan Shearer and Sergei Rebrov in the cup ties against Tottenham and Newcastle respectively. Strong both on the ground and in the air he is a difficult player to pass and continued to be a key figure for the Os.
Smith left Brisbane Road in February 2003 when he signed for First Division Sheffield Wednesday for an undisclosed fee with a contract up to June 2004. He then moved on to Port Vale in a one-year deal but returned to Leyton Orient in January 2005 as youth team manager.
