Howell signed a one-year contract for Crewe Alexandra in the 2000 close season but managed only one appearance from the subs bench for the Railwaymen.
He joined Third Division Rochdale on loan in March to provide extra options on the left hand side and played a prominent role in Dale's excellent draw at Hartlepool United.
However, with other players coming back from injury and further new signings, Howell managed only one more start before returning to Gresty Road.
He is a left-sided defender with good pace who enjoys moving down the flank to support the attack.
Howell joined Colchester United in August 2005 with a five-month contract.
He joined Fleetwood Town in July 2012 with a two-year contract that was cancelled in January 2014.
