Smith found his opportunities with Grimsby Town rather limited last season due to the consistency of regular left back Tony Gallimore and most of his appearances came during two spells when Gallimore was out injured. Smith himself was then sidelined after being injured in the match at Nottingham Forest in February, but returned before the end of the campaign to make a couple of appearances from the subs' bench. A pacy left-sided player he had previously appeared as a left winger for the Mariners.
After joining Swansea City in the 2002 close season, his Vetch contract was not renewed in January 2003.
