Holdsworth was in fine form for Birmingham City in the early part of last season, marshalling the defence with a calm assurance and reading the play very well. However he had his tonsils removed in November and ended up back in a hospital trauma ward after suffering severe haemorrhaging, he then had trouble eating and drinking and lost a stone in weight before finally setting out on the road to recovery. He made a surprise return to the subs' bench for the Worthington Cup final and subsequently returned to first-team action for the Blues.
Holdsworth, who is the twin brother of Bolton's Dean Holdsworth, joined Wanderers on a monthly contract in August 2002.
