Herd grew up in Manchester, his father Alex Herd, playing for Manchester City spanning WW2, In May 1951 Herd made his League debut aged 17 for Stockport County playing in the same forward line as his dad (who was also the manager). How the Manchester clubs missed him is a mystery, but he spent 7 prolific seasons at Arsenal before arriving at Old Trafford in 1961. Scotland International. With such an impressive scoring rate, it remained a mystery that Arsenal were so keen to offload the Scottish sharpshooter. His departure saw him become a member of one of Manchester United's greatest sides.
One of United's greatest strikers, a fierce shot combined with a strong work ethic made him a vital member of one of United's greatest sides. He won two League titles (1965 and 1967), the FA Cup (1963) but missed out on the European Cup of 1968 with a broken leg which virtually ended his career.
