A product of the Manchester United youth system, he signed for the club in November 1997.
He made one appearance in the Worthington Cup against Aston Villa in September 1999.
David made his full international debut against Luxembourg in February 2000, scoring two goals.
He was loaned to Port Vale in February 2000 for the rest of the season but could not prevent the team from being relegated.
David began the 2000-01 campaign at Old Trafford.
He appeared as a substitute in the Worthington Cup game against Sunderland in November and also in the Premiership against Ipswich Town the following month before joining Preston North End after one game on loan for a new club record fee of £1.5 million in January 2001.
He scored in the fourth minute of his debut at Sheffield United and his partnership up front with Jon Macken developed well.
A nippy striker with an excellent eye for goal, he continued to be a regular for his country for whom he scored three times during the campaign.
Preston just failed to make the Premiership falling at the final hurdle, losing to Birmingham City in the Play-Off Final.
He continued his excellent progress in 2001-02 being a virtual ever present and scoring his first hat-trick against Stockport County in November 2001.
David joined Leeds United in October 2004 with a contract to June 2008.
He joined Fulham in July 2007 with a four-year contract.
David joined Sunderland in August 2008 with a three-year contract.
He joined Bury in August 2012 with a one-year contract.
