Hay joined Chelsea from Celtic where he had enjoyed great success including five League championships. He had also been excellent in Scotland's 1974 World Cup campaign. He quickly became a regular in Chelsea's midfield but increasingly suffered from eye and knee problems. He later moved on to a managerial career including a spell at Parkhead.
