With all the style associated with his native St Tropez and the physique to match, David took Tyne side by storm. Tall and elegant, his performances on the United left wing contributed to bringing a stunning level of exciting football to St James' Park.

Easily the most talented player of his generation, David finally moved to Villa Park after protracted on-off transfer negotiations with Spurs at the end of the 1999-2000 season. He suffered a torrid time at Villa having several very public arguments with manager John Gregory. He was only used sparingly and When Graham Taylor was appointed as the new manager of Villa in February 2002 he was allowed to leave for Everton on a free transfer.
