Fairclough was known as 'subersub' for his regular ability to score after coming off the bench. With Liverpool he won the 1st Division Championship in 1976, 1977 and 1980, League Cup in 1983, UEFA Cup in 1976 and European Cup in 1978. He was famously scorer of the crucial goal against St Etienne in the 1977 European Cup quarter final.
