A veteran left winger and consummate professional, David was rewarded with a new one-year contract at Preston North End during the summer of 2000, and had a permanent place on the bench in the early season.
However, frustrated by a lack of first-team football, he left for Oldham Athletic in October where his arrival marked a turning point in the club's campaign, as a desperate run of six points from 11 games suddenly became one of just four defeats in 19 Second Division matches.
Employed either as a left wing back or out-and- out winger, he provided some much-needed width and the occasional goal.
David agreed a new one-year contract with the Latics in July 2003.
After Iain Dowie resigned to take over at Crystal Palace in December 2003, along with John Sheridan, David became caretaker manager at Oldham Athletic.
At the age of 41, David's contract at Oldham was extended to June 2006 in June 2005.
