David Brightwell became manager Brian Little's first signing for Hull City in June 2000 and he quickly became a commanding figure on the left of a three-man defence.

The highlight of his time at Boothferry Park came when he netted a late free kick that proved to be the winner in the Humber derby at Scunthorpe United in December 2000.

With the Tigers hitting financial problems in the New Year, David elected to move on to Darlington where he immediately established himself in the heart of the defence alongside Craig Liddle.

Strong in the air and uncompromising in the tackle, he gave the defence a more solid look and produced a series of resolute displays.

He is the younger brother of Ian Brightwell.
