Walton was again troubled by injuries at Crewe Alexandra for much of 2000-01 and only featured on a regular basis in the early part of the campaign.
He returned for a brief spell in February, but was then sidelined again in the following month with hamstring trouble and failed to return to the line-up before the summer break.
A commanding central defender, he is particularly effective in the air.
Walton joined Derby County in June 2003 on a two-year contract but was made available for transfer in May 2004. He returned to Shrewsbury Town with a two-year contract but it was cancelled in January 2006 due to a knee injury.
