Snapped up by Newcastle United after only a handful of appearances for Lincoln City, although didn't fulfil his potential on Tyneside, he did go on to justify their judgement elsewhere.

Darren again found it difficult to win a place in the starting line-up at Leeds United in 2000-01 and mostly found himself on the substitutes' bench.

He scored one of United's goals in the 6-0 Champions' League win over Besiktas and netted a double in the 3-2 Worthington Cup defeat by Tranmere Rovers but was increasingly marginalised towards the end of the year.

Shortly after Christmas, he moved across the Pennines to join Manchester City and made an immediate impact on his debut from the subs' bench winning and then converting a consolation penalty as the Blues went down 4-1.

However, after a run of eight games in the starting line-up, he was relegated to the bench again and added just one more goal, a fine individual effort in the FA Cup victory over Birmingham City.

A tricky striker with lightning pace, after a loan spell at Carrow Road, Darren joined Norwich City in December 2003 with a contract to June 2006 that was extended to June 2007 in November 2004, then to June 2008 in December 2006.
