Dunning joined Bristol City on loan in the early part of 2000-01 to gain some experience of first-team football and proved an immediate hit with the club's supporters. He added much-needed steel in the centre of the park in his brief spell at Ashton Gate before returning to Lancashire to continue his development in the reserves.
He went on to make his debut for Blackburn Rovers in the Worthington Cup tie against West Ham United and later also featured in the FA Cup game against Chester City and an end-of-season match with Gillingham.
The captain of Rovers' reserve team he is a versatile midfield player who is more comfortable in a central role rather than in a position wide on the left.
Dunning joined York City in July 2003 on a one-year contract but this was extended to June 2006 in February 2004.
