After been released by Blackpool Darren had trials with Bolton during the 2000 close season before signing a 12-month contract for Macclesfield Town. He appeared regularly for Macc's reserve and youth teams but made just a single first team appearance when he came on as a last minute substitute in the away win at Lincoln in February 2001.
