A former England Youth international with an ability to score goals from midfield, Darren made well over 250 appearances at club level, mostly for Reading.
Although still very much a creative force in midfield for Reading in 2000-01, he was unable to repeat his success or goal-scoring feats of the previous campaign.
Darren eventually lost the captain's armband to Phil Parkinson and was increasingly confined to the substitutes bench for the final two months.
Still an expert at dead-ball situations, he nevertheless managed a respectable double-figure tally of goals for the Royals.
He was granted a free transfer in May as Reading boss Alan Pardew sought to restructure his squad following the disappointing defeat by Walsall in the play-off final and Notts County moved quickly to secure Darren's services.
Darren joined Bristol City in March 2004 on non-contract terms then Peterborough United in November 2004 on the same basis.
Darren joined Rushden & Diamonds in January 2006 with a contract to the end of the season.
He also played for AFC Hornchurch, Halesowen and Ilkeston Town before joining Gateshead as assistant manager in 2013.
