Silva began his career at Defensor Sporting before moving to Penerol for the 1993 season.
His performances earned him an international debut in October 1994 against Peru.
He moved to Cagliari in Italy in 1995 where he spent four seasons before moving to Espanyol in the middle of the 1998-99 season.
He left to sign for Malaga at the end of that season where he became one of the stars of the team.
He has excellent strength, is good in the air and often found himself as a lone striker as Uruguay packed the midfield.
He joined Portsmouth in August 2005 with a two-year contract that was cancelled in February 2006.
Silva had his lower right leg amputated as a result of a serious car crash in September 2006.
He was not contracted with a club at the time when he was driving in Montevideo, lost control of his vehicle and hit a column of street lights.
