Russell was a near ever-present for Norwich City in the 2000-01 campaign.
A powerful midfielder, he has the ability to take a game by the scruff of the neck and drive his team forward by virtue of his work-rate and ball-winning qualities.
A naturally attacking player, he loves to set his sights from long range and shoot at goal, although his season's tally was not as he would have liked.
Although only just out of his teens, he had already played nearly 100 senior games for the Canaries, advancing his career at an early stage which could only benefit him as he continued to improve.
Russell joined Stoke City in August 2003 on a three-year contract.
He returned to Norwich City in July 2007 in a three-year deal.
Russell joined Preston North End in August 2010 in a three-year deal but was made available for transfer in May 2012 before his contract was cancelled in July 2012.
He joined Portsmouth in August 2012 with a monthly contract.
