Gary Neville's late injury withdrawal gave Danny Mills an unexpected starting opportunity at right back in the 2002 World Cup finals.
A determined competitor who can also play at centre back, his surging runs down the wing adds to England's attacking armoury.
A suspect temperament was a concern to Sven-Goran Eriksson, but the Leeds United defender was well aware of his responsibilities.
He began his career at his home town club - Norwich City - before joining Charlton Athletic for £350,000 in 1999.
The following year saw his £4.37million switch to Leeds United where he gained Champions' League experience.
Danny made his full international debut against Mexico in June 2001 having previously represented England at Under-21 and youth levels.
Danny joined Manchester City in July 2004 with a five-year contract but was made available for transfer in May 2005 and again August 2007.
He announced his retirement in August 2009 due to a knee injury.
