Griffin joined St Johnstone as a youngster and made his first-team debut for the Perth club as a 17-year old. He went on to win a regular place in the line-up before joining Dundee United in July 2000. A versatile player who is now mostly used as a centre back, he was appointed club captain the following summer after the departure of Jason de Vos. On the international front Griffin made his senior debut for Northern Ireland against Germany in May 1996 and has now won more than 20 full caps and 10 at Under-21 level.
Griffin was signed by his former Northern Ireland manager Sammy McIlroy at Stockport County in January 2004 with a contract to June 2006 but was made available for transfer in May 2005.
