Dichio continued to wait patiently in the wings as Niall Quinn's understudy at Sunderland in 2000-01 and has now performed this role for over three seasons.
Strong in the air and not afraid to compete where it hurts, his contributions are always wholehearted however intermittently he is called up for duty.
His early season games were restricted to outings in the Worthington Cup before he got his chance in the Premiership against Ipswich Town on New Year's Day.
He scored in a 4-1 win and followed this up with the winner against the same opposition three weeks later when he netted with a trademark diving header to put the Wearsiders through to the Fifth Round of the FA Cup.
Generally however he was restricted to cameo appearances from the substitutes' bench.
Dichio joined Preston North End in July 2005 with a two-year contract.
