Since moving from Dinamo Zagreb to Panathinaikos for £500,000 in the 2000 close season, Daniel has benefited from the Athens club's progress in the Champions League. An attacking midfielder, he has held a regular place in the national side since his debut against Slovenia in October 1997. He began his career with Rijeka, then had a largely disappointing spell in Spain with Sporting Gijon between 1993 and 1996. He was recommended to Panathinaikos by their former player and manager Velimer Zaez.
