Cliff 'Boy' Bastin held Arsenal's scoring record of 178 until it was eclipsed by Ian Wright in 1997.
He was bought by Herbert Chapman for £2,000 from Exeter City the day after he was spotted as a teenager.
He was mainly used as a winger and blessed with an ice-cold nerve - his great skill making him one of the most brilliant players in Arsenal's history.
