His surprise move to Scottish football has proved to be the opportunity that has led to Claudio's surprise inclusion in Argentina's squad for Japan and South Korea. One of only two of their 23 who did not participate in the qualifying campaign, the veteran striker began his career at River Plate before moving to Italy with Verona in 1988, soon moving on to Atalanta. At Verona he had become good friends with Dario Bonetti. As Dario was assistant to his brother Ivano at Dundee, the route to Claudio's entry into Scotland - via AS Roma, Benfica, Boca Juniors and a return to Atalanta - had begun long before his arrival at Dens Park in October 2000. His SPL form led to a lucrative move to Rangers, having also had offers from Japan, Saudi Arabia and the USA.

He won his 50th cap when he was recalled by coach Marcelo Bielsa for the friendly in Wales in March 2002.

Claudio travelled to the Far East for his fourth World Cup finals. As he didn't appear in any of Argentina's three matches, his only involvement was being sent-off for abusive language to the fourth official during the final game with Sweden - the last act of his international career.
