This experienced defensive midfield player made his full international debut for France in July 1995 but it was not until the 2000-01 campaign that he began to feature regularly in the squad.
At club level, his career began at Nantes where he was a member of the team that won the French League title in 1994-95.
He subsequently spent a season at Marseille before moving to Spain where he initially played for Celta Vigo.
Some fine performances earned him a move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2000 and he won a Primera Liga championship medal in his first season with the club.
Claude joined Chelsea in August 2003 in a four-year deal for a reported £16million fee.
An experienced, intelligent and highly effective defensive midfielder, Claude is extremely popular with the Chelsea faithful and has played a significant role in their recent successes.
His Chelsea contract was extended to June 2009 in August 2007.
