Metzelder began his career at Third Division club Preussen Munster before moving to Borussia Dortmund in 2000 where he became a regular at the heart of their defence.
He was one of the younger members of the Germany squad that travelled to the Far East in 2002. He did not play a part in their World Cup qualification but made his debut in August 2001 against Hungary.
Metzelder played in all of Germany's games in the 2002 World Cup finals, including the final against Brazil in Yokohama.
