Tardif signed professional forms in August 1998 and looked a good prospect.
He was well down the pecking order at Portsmouth at the start of the 2000-01 campaign, but following the departure of Russell Hoult in the New Year, he found himself raised to second choice to Aaron Flahavan.
He was unexpectedly given his senior debut in the FA Cup tie against Tranmere Rovers when Pompey were decimated by illness and injuries and did his best under difficult circumstances, before going on to make two more senior appearances later in the season.
A promising 'keeper who shows good command of his area, he earned a three-year contract from new boss Graham Rix in the summer of 2001.
He found himself in a similar situation in the 2001-02 season being third choice behind Dave Beasant and new signing Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi.
After the departure of Graham Rix, he was deemed surplus to requirements and was made available for transfer at the end of the 2001-02 season.
