Two-footed and equally adaptable on either flank, Chris's powerful tackling made him something of a cult hero with the Sunderland faithful in 2000-01.
He was one of the Wearsiders' most consistent performers when he was surprisingly allowed to leave to join Ipswich Town in March.
Ironically, he made his debut against Aston Villa - the team he had opposed in his last game for the Black Cats - and due to the vagaries of the fixture list it was a month after this that he made his first appearance at Portman Road for Town.
He celebrated in style, delivering a deep cross from which Alun Armstrong scored the goal that brought a home point against Liverpool.
Equally comfortable on either flank or even in the centre of defence, he is a solid tackler who has a good turn of pace and enhanced the quality of the squad at Ipswich.
Chris joined Leicester City in August 2004 with a one-year contract.
After a brief stint at Derby County, he joined Reading in July 2005 in another one-year deal.
Chris joined Southampton in August 2006 with a two-year contract.
He announced his retirement in April 2008 due to a hip injury.
