Clarke only featured intermittently for Halifax Town in the first half of 2000-01 before winning a regular place in the New Year. He went on to produce a series of outstanding displays and opened his goalscoring account for the Shaymen with a close-range goal in 3-0 victory over Barnet in March.
A tall and powerful defender, he is the twin brother of his former Halifax colleague, Matthew Clarke.
Clarke joined Cambridge United in March 2004 with a contract to the end of the season.
