Brass proved unable to displace any of the talented Burnley defenders and went out on loan to Halifax Town in September 2000.

Employed in a midfield role by the Shaymen, he added extra bite in the centre of the park before returning to Turf Moor.

In March 2001, he made a permanent move to York City and captained the Minstermen on his full debut for the club at Leyton Orient.

He produced some very impressive performances in the closing weeks of the campaign.

Brass is a commanding central defender who is strong in the tackle and has good distribution.

Over a month before his 28th birthday, Brass was appointed player / manager of York City on 4 June 2003.

Not only did he become the Minstermen's youngest-ever boss, Brass is believed to be English senior football's youngest manager since Carlisle United appointed Ivor Broadis in August 1946 at the age of 23.

Brass joined Bury in January 2006 with a contract to the end of the season that was extended to June 2007 in May 2006.
