Banks missed only a handful of matches for Cheltenham Town in the 2000-01 season and also scored his first league goal for many years in the 1-1 draw with local rivals Kidderminster in November. Although no longer as quick as he once was, he has a sharp football brain and reads the game well from the centre of defence. He is at his best alongside a big defender who attacks the ball while Banks drops deeper to cover space and pick up runners. His value to the team was recognised by his colleagues who voted him 'Players' Player of the Season'.
On the day in January 2003 that Banks announced his retirement due to a knee injury, he was named Town's joint caretaker manager following the sacking of Graham Allner.
