Armstrong made tremendous progress for Bury in 2000-01 for having begun the season as an untried trainee.
He stepped up to the professional ranks and featured regularly for the Shakers in the second half of the campaign.
He looked very confident in a left-back role showing good skills on the ball, accurate distribution and strength in the air.
Armstrong is the younger brother of Burnley's Gordon Armstrong.
His contract at Sheffield United was extended to June 2009 in July 2006.
Armstrong announced his retirement in March 2011 due to multiple sclerosis.
