Charlie Roberts

United's first great side was the one which won promotion (1906), the club's first league title (1908), their first FA Cup (1909) and the league title again (1911). Throughout this period Charlie Roberts was captain and centre half, a key position, when 2-3-5 was the system. Roberts was exceptionally strong, quick in thought and movement, a lethal tackler and a good passer. The half-back line of Duckworth, Roberts and Bell was the best in the league, the key to their success. Roberts' influence then can be compared with Keane's in more recent times. Charlie was one of the leading lights in the formation of the Players' Union, its chairman until 1921.
