MacDonald was expected to break into the Charlton Athletic side in 2000-01 but found his chances limited by the abundance of strikers at the club.
He is an exciting prospect with a good scoring record in the junior and reserve teams and, although he made the starting line up for the home game against Middlesbrough, he spent the last couple of months of the season on loan at Cheltenham Town to gain experience of first-team football.
He made a good impression at Whaddon Road and played particularly well in the 2-2 draw at Blackpool when he scored both goals.
Although short for a striker MacDonald is quick, strong on the ball and has an excellent first touch.
He joined Southend United in July 2007 with a two-year contract but was made available for transfer in May 2008.
He joined Brentford in July 2008 with a two-year contract that was extended to June 2012 in March 2010.
MacDonald joined Milton Keynes Dons in August 2011 with a two-year contract.
He joined Oldham Athletic in July 2013 with a one-year contract.
