Palmer made a steady start to the 2000-01 season at Coventry City but, following a red card in the home game with Tottenham Hotspur, he seemed to fall out of favour and soon afterwards he was dropped for Lee Carsley.
This prompted a loan period at Watford under his former England boss Graham Taylor but, just as he had settled in at Vicarage Road, he was recalled by the Sky Blues to cover for injuries and suspensions and made one final appearance as a substitute against Everton.
At the end of January he was given a free transfer and he linked up with one of his former clubs, Sheffield Wednesday.
His leadership qualities were welcomed at Hillsborough and his arrival coincided with an upturn in the Owls' fortunes.
Always a larger-than-life figure and a major influence in the dressing room, his aggressive midfield play and hard running make him an ideal character for any team needing a boost.
He joined Stockport County as player-manager in early November 2001.
