Heggs became Ian Atkins' first signing for Carlisle United in August 2000 and, although his appearances were restricted by injury, he came back bravely to feature in the final games of the season.

A hard working striker who never lets his opponents relax, he netted some vital goals for the Cumbrians including a 25-yard strike against Chesterfield which was one of the best goals seen at Brunton Park all season, and a top-quality volley to clinch a point at Lincoln City in the vital end-of-season clash.
