Having broken through at Bournemouth in the 1999-2000 campaign, Carl firmly established himself in the first team in 2000-01 and rarely missed a game.
A midfield player who is strong in the tackle and capable of scoring spectacular goals, he formed a strong partnership in the centre of the park with Richard Hughes.
Carl signed a new two-year contract with the Cherries in May 2003.
He was made available for transfer by Crystal Palace in August 2008.
After a loan spell, Carl joined Plymouth Argyle in July 2009 in a two-year deal.
