With some 250 appearances for his three clubs, the experienced goalkeeper was again second choice to Jimmy Walker at Walsall in the 2000-01 campaign.
When called up for action in the 3-0 win over Stoke City in October, he seemed to be on the edge of an extended run in the team but he lost his place soon afterwards and then only appeared in the two LDV Vans Trophy games.
A useful back-up 'keeper, he was released by the Saddlers in the summer of 2001.
Carl joined Southend United in July 2003 in a two-year deal but his Shrimpers contract was cancelled in April 2004.
