O'Neil joined Derby County in the exchange deal that saw Stefan Schnoor return to Germany.
Unfortunately, he suffered a serious knee injury just two minutes into his debut against Manchester United and this led to a long lay-off, although he eventually returned to first-team action before the end of the season.
A versatile player who is at home either in defence or a midfield 'holding' role, he is a fine passer of the ball and excellent at breaking up opposition moves.
O'Neil retired due to injury in October 2006.
