Brian Barry-Murphy began his career in the Republic of Ireland playing for Cork City and was a regular member of the Eire Under-21 squad before signing for Preston North End on a Bosman in August 1999.
He made his league debut on the last day of the 1999-2000 season against Bristol City.
He could not establish himself as a regular in the 2000-01 season despite making his first start in the team in the Worthington Cup tie at Shrewsbury Town, but it was not until the Boxing Day game against Wolverhampton Wanderers that he featured in league action.
He appeared regularly from the subs bench in the second half of the campaign and great things were expected of him at Deepdale providing he continued to develop in similar fashion.
He suffered a frustrating 2001-02 season and was loaned out to Southend United to give him more first team experience.
Mainly a wide left-sided midfield player, he has a powerful shot, and looks very classy on the ball, distributing with confidence and accuracy.
Brian joined Bury in July 2004 with a one-year contract that was extended to June 2006 in May 2005.
He joined Rochdale in July 2010 with a two-year contract.
His contract at Rochdale was extended to June 2015 in June 2014 and to June 2016 in July 2015.
